Welcome all those who were kind enough to hand me their email!
We may confuse some with who we are and what we are about; however, it is quite simple:
- Art
- Community
- Education
- Other similar bullshit
How Can You Help?
If you wish to get more involved, please let me know by responding to this email with any specific talents, ideas, desires, etc.
If we have talked already outside, write me back, and we can continue to speak. If you can do any of the following, please also respond:
- Educate others on something you know
- Would like to help host an event
- Can play music and wants to help set up band night
- This dot is for you to fill in your own creative way of helping.
A Note From The Editor
Narrative is the most important thing we have in this world, and BHRP’s story begins here, with those adventurous enough to sign up for an email list from a dude smoking weed on Sproul. I’m excited to take this journey and run with those who would want to. What does it mean to ‘run’ in this case? Don’t worry, I mean it in a totally chill context. I want the excitement of creating moments to be the focus of this organization. In any way I can bring some defining college moment, we are here to help. We want to inspire YOU to want to be with your fellow bears. Do you want a potluck? Do you want a band night? WHAT IS IT YOU WANT TO SEE IN THIS WORLD!?
Here is a rant on Berkeley’s rent prices:
RAISING CANES took my damn SMOKE SHOP away! Whelans was the 126-year-old smoke shop across campus on Bancroft. Here, for the first year of my Berkeley attendance, I had purchased all manner of items from tobacco to vaporizers to bongs. It provided for all my smoking needs and had done so for many others for well over a century. I walk in one day: “Sorry boss, we’re moving. Canes took our spot.” A damn franchised store stole the spot of a Berkeley landmark. Of course, this story is known all too well in modern Berkeley. People’s Park gets chopped, The Starving Musician gets axed, Half Priced Books gets popped, and many more locals suffer the plague of highly corporatized, profit-seeking ventures. What is the illness? Landlords have been so damn greedy, they want more money; the city does not care about local business or historical value. Add these two conditions, and we see businesses that have been thriving for decades closing their doors due to being financially squeezed.
I just want my damn jar of tobacco kept with the moisture packets for $20 an ounce, I don’t need dry ass chicken.
What is a Grant Writer?
When an organization makes no money (or very little of it), they need other people to give them a ‘handout’. Now, the magic word is please, and those with the voice asking for it are hired by an organization to beg professionally. Maybe the org does cancer research, maybe they make vapes, maybe they’re a farm. I only have a connection to the last one right now. Here is an example of the work of a farm grant writer, essential in the business of local agriculture (contact me if you would like to have this as a position):
